Sun-Kissed Strands: Unveiling the Balayage Technique

If you’ve ever desired hair with a touch of summer sun, where the colour seems to effortlessly flow from light to dark, we can help you achieve this with the popular colouring technique called Balayage (pronounced bah-lay-age), which comes from the French word for “sweeping.”

What is Balayage?

Unlike traditional highlights which involves us using foils to create a defined contrast, Balayage is a freehand painting technique which involves applying colour directly to sections of hair. This results in a softer, more natural-looking gradation of colour, often described as “sun-kissed”.

Why Choose Balayage?

Customisation: Balayage can be tailored to your specific hair colour and preferred level of lightness.

Low Maintenance: The blended nature of Balayage makes regrowth less noticeable, reducing the frequency of touch-ups needed.

Natural Dimension: By adding highlights throughout the hair, Balayage creates depth and texture, mimicking the way hair lightens naturally in the sun.

Versatility: Balayage can be applied to all hair colours, from blonde to brunette to black, and even incorporates multi-tonal shades for added complexity.

Balayage vs. Other Techniques

HIGHLIGHTS
Balayage provides a softer, more natural look compared to traditional foil highlights, which can have a more defined contrast.

OMBRE
Ombre hair has a more dramatic contrast between dark roots and lightened ends, whereas Balayage features a smoother blend of colour.

SOMBRE
Similar to Ombre but uses darker tones for a more subtle lightening effect. Both Sombre and Ombre are typically more dramatic than balayage.

Balayage Variations

FULL BALAYAGE
Lightens all of your hair using the balayage technique.

PARTIAL BALAYAGE
Focuses on lightening just the top and outer layers of hair.

REVERSE BALAYAGE
Uses dark colours to add lowlights for increased depth and texture.

Maintaining your Balayage

The beauty of Balayage is that it requires minimal upkeep. However, to keep your hair healthy after any colouring treatment, using a good quality conditioner and avoiding heat styling whenever possible is recommended.

Is Balayage right for you?

A consultation with one of our colourists can help you determine if Balayage is the right choice for your hair and desired look. We can also advise on the time and cost involved, which can vary depending on factors like hair length and the desired level of lightening.
